For the past thirty years, I have dedicated my career to working with children and families in the mental health and human services field. Most recently, I have worked in educational settings focused on individual work with children who have experienced trauma and the development of mindfulness skills in the classroom. Research shows that mindfulness in education improves attention, emotional regulation, compassion for self and others, and overall well-being for both kids and teachers. Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo- Breathing in the Calm will introduce parents, therapists, educators and children to some of the many benefits of a mindfulness practice. My book is available on Amazon, directly from my publisher Loving Healing Press (https://www.lhpress.com) and in the SHOP section of this website. Stay tuned for my second book, Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo - Alphabet, Feelings and Friends to be released in the fall of 2020.
I have been practicing social work for over 30 years in the mental health, human services and educational settings. I have a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Maine and am licensed as a Clinical Social Worker in Maine. I work with individuals and families of all ages with a holistic person-centered approach and a focus on trauma informed care. I believe you are the expert of your life and I am your guide to resolve past and present events and improve the quality of your life and your personal growth. I will strive to provide a safe and supportive environment for you to heal from past trauma, depression, anxiety, and cope with general life stressors. My approach is eclectic and flexible to meet the needs of each client. My goal is to help my clients gain new perspectives. I have been trained as a TIR (Traumatic Incident Reduction) facilitator which is an evidence based modality to resolve traumatic stress, discharge life stress issues, and expand your current abilities and satisfaction in life.
As a social worker, I believe in a holistic approach to mental well being which includes physical activity and being with nature. I've had some amazing adventures in my lifetime including: climbing Mt. Katahdin in the middle of winter, hiking and biking 500 miles across Spain with my daughter and several years raising money for Multiple Sclerosis, biking the MS 150 in Maine! Each adventure has taught me valuable lessons about life, love, and how important it is to stay active and accept new challenges. I've created a blog to share my latest experiences hiking different parts of Maine. I've set a goal to hike all the State parks and any other interesting and beautiful locations, which Maine has plenty! Check it out at the link below.
I love to read. My favorite genre for entertainment is historical fiction. Reading can be a great way to relax when you need an escape from reality. It's also a great way to learn and grow. I use a lot of books with my clients to support what we are doing together in sessions. One of the reasons I decided to start writing children's books was to help children understand their sometimes complicated feelings and process in a different way. I've expanded my resources by offering additional books, other than my own, in the SHOP section my website. Stay tuned for my second book, Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo - Alphabet, Feelings and Friends, to be released in late November, 2020. Happy reading!
Plants have been linked to the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of mankind since the beginning of time. Essential oils are extracted from various parts of plants mainly through steam distillation. I'm certainly not an expert, but I am a believer. I gradually replaced all cleaning products in my home to plant based products and added essential oils to my daily routine through diffusing, ingestion and topical application. Facing serious health issues, I researched and changed my life through this process. I am cancer free and although I cannot prove the oils made a difference, with proper medical care and careful research, I am a believer that my physical, emotional and spiritual well-being has improved immensely. Essential oils are a part of an overall wellness routine. They don't replace the need for physical, spiritual or mental health support when needed, but they can give you that extra boost to make a difference.
